“Last Days DVD Series” Outline – Dr. William Bell

For the past few months we have been reviewing Dr. William Bell’s video series on the “Last Days” in our Saturday morning Bible study at The Blue Point Bible Church. Below I will share notes from each week’s study for the review and edification of others. The goal would be to watch the series, utilize the notes for an outline, and for each student to be able to explain the concepts behind each video – What would happen when Shiloh comes? What’s the Song of Moses detailing about the “last days”? What eschatological significance can we gain from learning about Zion? What was and is the consummated work of the eschatological Spirit?

Video 1 – Until Shiloh Comes

  • Protology (the study of beginning things) and eschatology (the study of last things) are intimately connected. Both require HERMENUETICS of AUDIENCE RELEVANCE & TIME STATEMENTS.
  • Jeremiah 31 cf. Hebrews 8:6
  • What we need is to develop an “Old Covenant GPS” – “God has laid everything out”
    Genesis 49; Deuteronomy 31-32; 1 Samuel 8
  • Bell outlined a narrative understanding from Genesis to 1 Samuel chapter 8.
  • “Every time Christ was offered “earthly rule”, He refused, because it was seen as rejected the rule of God”.

Video 2 – Song of Moses

  • Genesis 49:10 – “The scepter will not depart from Judah” (last days prophecy)

Dr. Bell begins to “Recap history and pull in prophecies”.
721 BC – Hoshea leads Israel (10 northern tribes) into idolatry (cf. 2 Kings 15:30; 17:1-6)
“Israel is swallowed up of the Gentiles”  – Jonah, Hosea
Deut. 24:1-5; Jeremiah 1:8 (God divorces Israel)

  • “Peace that abides in the Kingdom of God is not the absence of military conflict (cf. Isaiah 32:15-20)”.
  • Peter quotes Hosea as being fulfilled in his day (cf. Hosea 1:9-10; 2:23; 3:5 cf. 1 Peter 2:9-10
    “Israel’s soteriology”
  • Hosea 5 – Israel torn by lion and dies. Cf. Hosea 13 – how did Ephraim die and sin no more?
  • Judah ( 2 southern tribes) fails to learn from Israel’s (10 northern tribes) judgement.
    (cf. Isaiah study)
  • A Kingdom picture
    Jacob – Gen. 49:10
    Moses – 1500 BC – Deut. 31-32
King Saul and King David – 1 Samuel 8
Split in Kingdom after King Solomon
    Assyrian Invasion – 721 BC
    Babylonian Invasion – 586 BC
    Jesus Christ – 1st century
    AD 70

Video 2 – Continued

  • “Last Days” – Israel’s end time, not ours
    5:16-18; Acts 24:14-15; Acts 26:22 – 23; 1 Peter 1:10-12; Revelation 10:7
  • “The end of Judah” cf. Deuteronomy 31:29-30
  • 2 Peter 3:3-5; 2 Peter 2:5 – What “world” was destroyed in the days of Noah? That is our contrast, but, what happened in Noah’s generation that would never happen again?
  • Matthew 24:3 cf. 1 Corinthians 10:11
  • Deuteronomy 32:29 cf. 1 Thessalonians 5 (cf. Luke 19:41-44)

Group Study on Deuteronomy chapters 31-32
OICA acronym – Observation, Interpretation, Correlation, Application

  • 31
    Moses is readying to die.
    v. 4 – “He will do to them…”
    v. 7 – “Go with this people into the land”
(promises to the forefathers  – Deut. 29:13)
    v. 10-13 – “At the end of every 7 years” (laws and curses, ingathering/harvest)
    v. 15 – The Lord’s appearance (in a cloud)
    v. 16 – “The people will wander away” (idolatry)
    v. 17-18 – idolatry, wickedness – He will turn His face from them
    v. 19 – Give this song, “That this song may be a witness for Me against the children of Israel”
    v. 28 – gather officers and elders
    v. 29 – evil will befall them in the last days
  • 32
    v. 1 – cf. Deut. 31:28 – who is Moses speaking to? Cf. Genesis 49
    v. 4 – “rock” cf. Exodus 17 and Numbers 20
    v. 5 – “crooked and perverse generation” cf. Matthew 17:17; Philippians 2:15
    v. 8 – “divided the sons of Adam” cf. Acts 17:26

    v. 36 – “His people”, “His servants”, “their power” cf. Daniel 12:7
    v. 39 – 43 – faithfulness, rejoice ! Cf. Isaiah 55:11

Video 3 – The Word Goes Forth From Zion

  • Note the importance of Zion in eschatology (look up in Blue Letter Bible)
    Zion = Church = Kingdom
    Isaiah 2:3 – rebuilding the Temple (cf. Micah 4:2; Zechariah 6:12-13; Mark 15:58; Acts 7:47 – 50; Matthew 12:6-8)
  • King + Priest – the Old Covenant could NOT produce that! The Branch will do this! (Jesus)
  • In our proof-texting, Isaiah and Zechariah, we should put together the historical – chronological narrative and consider the Rabbinic tradition of the “coming of the Lord” and the rebuilding of the Temple. (see, Challenge & Transformation: Second Temple & Rabbinic Judaism – Jewish Learning Institute – myjli.com
  • Hebrews 2:1-4; Hebrews 9:26 – “Last Days” began…
“consummation of the age”; “fullness of time” – Christianity can NOT have “last days”.
  • “When the Messenger appears, then the Lord will suddenly come to His Temple (cf. Malachi 3:1; Romans 10:5 (first-fruits); Revelation 7:14

Video 4 – The Eschatological Spirit

  • 5- fold picture
    Miraculous nature
    2. Purpose of Second Exodus
    3. Time of pouring out – last days
    4. Duration of the Spirit
    5. The result of the work
  • Spirit’s work for a “particular time” cf. Joel 2:28-32 (future); Acts 2:16-20 (was already occurring)
    – a remnant will be saved (Romans 9 and 11)
    – “Specific signs when the Spirit was poured out” – Christ and the Apostles
    – “Spirit was given through the laying on the Apostles hands (cf. Acts 6: 5-6; 8:14-18; Romans 1:11; 2 Timothy 1:6)
    – Apostle Paul was last person qualified to impart miraculous nature of the Holy Spirit (cf. Galatians 3:3-5; Philippians 1:6; Jude 19)
  • Luke 9:31 – “exodus”
    – Exodus from flesh/ natural to Spirit (cf. Romans 7:4; Micah 7:15; Joshua 5:9; Galatians 4:21-230
    – 40 year imagery (exodus from Egypt; exodus from the Law)
  • The Spirit demonstrated the “Day of the Lord” was near (Galatians 4:4; Hebrews 1:1-2; 9:26)
  • “time of the end” – Daniel 8:17, 19; 11:35, 40; 12:4, 9
  • “There are no “last days” in a Kingdom that has no end” (cf. Isaiah 9:7; Ephesians 3:21)
  • “Till the end of the age” – Matthew 28:20
The Holy Spirit continued to the end of the age
  • John 14-16 (read all the way through to chapter 17)
    – Jesus would go away for “a little while”
    – Holy Spirit would be sent in His absence
    – After a little while, He would return
    – He returned to end the Jewish age in AD 70
    – The Holy Spirit continued to the end of the age

There is also a Video 5 which goes through Matthew chapter 24. We encourage you to study the details of Matthew chapters 23-24 in context, do some historical research, and prayerfully you will praise God for the power of Preterism!
