“Resurrection Talk” – Explained & Reviewed

The other night I put out a video called “Resurrection Talk” wherein I sought to explain with clarity the Corporate Body View (CBV) and the differentiation between what happened to the living, the asleep, and the dead ones at the coming of the Lord. In that video I explained the following points:

  • Properly frame discussion by looking at what the Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 10:1 – 11, in regards to the exodus event being recorded as an “example” upon those whom them ends of the age had come (I use past tense to point back to the 1st century). So looking back to the exodus, and having a familiarity with the “Law and the Prophets” as mentioned by the Apostle Paul to be the very source of his preaching the “resurrection of the dead” (cf. Acts 24:14-15; Acts 26:22-23)
  • In this video we will specifically focus on two texts – 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 and 1 Corinthians chapter 15.
  • As we go through the texts keep in mind the distinctions – the living (being those alive during the time of the coming of the Lord (cf. Matthew 16:27-28; Hebrews 8:13; Romans 8: 18-19, the asleep (cf. those who cannot die because they put faith in Jesus Christ but had biologically died during the time of transition. See, John 11:11, 25-26; 1 John 3:4), and the dead ones (cf. those who died prior to the birth of the Messiah; Hebrews 11:1 – 40).
  • We must maintain a corporate understanding of these things. This would have been already in the mind of the original Believers, yet due to the rise of Hellenism, individualist notions, secular humanism, and so much more, we have moved far away from necessary understating. Looking back to the exodus event, we note that the Israelites saw it as important to take Joseph’s bones with them (cf. Exodus 13:19). Also, 1 Corinthians 14:36 and Hebrews 11:39-40 are texts that reinforce the understanding that whatever was happening to a certain people (living), it was always important to consider from whom it originally came, and to know that whatever happens now (especially in regards to God’s covenant relationships) will bless those who have come before us (dead ones). This is all speaking about how the different groups of people would be effected by the transition of the covenants (Old to New Covenant).
  • In regards to 1 Thessalonians 4:13 – 18, I made the point that this text is informing the living how they should have hope regarding those who “had fallen asleep” (v.13). As per the text, the asleep will come with the Lord at His coming (v. 14), then those who are living will be gathered together (Greek word – harpazo – means to seize, the directional word “up” is an interpreter’s addition) to meet the Lord in the Spirit (Greek word aer means spirit or breathe, not the sky). This was the meeting with the Lord(Greek word – apantesis – usually used to depict a people going out to meet a king and follow him to his enthronement). The summation is the victory words, “…and so shall we ever be with the Lord (v. 17). I had mentioned that this Apostolic teaching seems to be directed toward a heresy that seemingly began in Thessalonica to disrupt the Gospel efforts, namely that “those who had fallen asleep” would miss out on the coming rewards to be given at the coming of the Lord.
  • In regards to 1 Corinthians 15:1- 58, I marked out the point of the text to be saying there will and must be a “resurrection of the dead” (Greek – “anastatis nekroi – a standing again of the dead ones”) and then discussion regarding how, or as the text says “with what kind of body will they come?” (v.35).  We note that there were many teaching false doctrines regarding how the goal of the ages was being revealed and seeking to corrupt the minds of those who had put their faith in Christ Jesus. In 2 Timothy 2:14-18, we read of two men particularly who went about teaching that the resurrection had already occurred (prior to the destruction of the Temple) which was marked out as a false teaching that disrupted the faith of many. The “resurrection of the dead” was vital to the fulfillment of the things because of what we marked out above about the necessary corporate understanding and that is exactly why the Apostle quotes two Old Testament passages right from the start of this chapter (v. 3 cf. Isaiah 52:14; Isaiah 53:1-12; v. 4 cf. Hosea 6:2). This becomes evident when we become immersed in the Biblical narrative. The point of the Apostolic teaching in 1 Corinthians chapter 15 is to highlight that if there was to be no “resurrection of the dead” (which points back those who died under the Law and the Prophets) than those who had “fallen asleep” have no hope (v.18), those who preach and believe are doing so in vain (v.17-19). God subjected the Old Covenant to death to produce life, a beautiful reality we see in nature. There was a natural body (Old Covenant people) and there is a Spiritual body (New Covenant).  Both had their glory (v.38-44) but flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God (v. 50). Jesus Christ was the revealing of the mystery of which the Apostle speaks about in verse 51. At the coming the Lord, some would be alive and not sleep (cf. Matthew 16:27-28; 1 Thessalonians 4:17), and would be changed (Greek word – Alasso – meaning to go from one mind to another; full clearing of conscience) and the dead would be raised incorruptible and immortal by way of the victory we have through Jesus Christ (v. 57). The dead would be raised in Christ Jesus and would be in the “one new man” (cf. Ephesians 2:15; 3:4-12; 4:22-24). It was this hope, the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets (two texts specifically cited in verses 54-55 are Isaiah 25:8 and Hosea 13:14), being fulfilled, that should cause us to be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the word of the Lord, knowing that we do not labor in vain (v.12). He is faithful to His promises indeed!

A few last remarks. I am putting my crazy drawing below (lol) of how I see all of this “resurrection talk” taking place at the destruction of the Temple in AD 70. Surely study and discussion should continue in these regards to work out and further explain details, even leaving room for corrections. However, in my estimation, this is a clear and concise foundational understanding of the things we see herein and need not be disturbed or mis-characterized by those who unfortunately take pride in doing such. May we find unity in the positive remarks found in both texts regarding encouraging and comforting one another and being steadfast and abounding in our work in the Lord.

An Introduction to and Praise of the Corporate Body View (CBV)

Establishing Himself as the fulfillment of all that was hoped for, Jesus Christ said:

“I am the Resurrection and the Life: he that believes in Me, though he were dead, yet he shall live: and whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this (John 11:25)”.

The Christian believes Jesus Christ to be the fulfillment of all that Israel longed for. The Apostle Paul explained the “hope of resurrection” best when he testified before governor Felix in Acts chapter 24:14-15:

“But this I admit to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect I do serve the God of our fathers, believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and the Prophets: having a hope in God, which these men cherish themselves, that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked”.

When we go back to the beginning of the Biblical story we read that Adam suffered death because of disobedience and this “death” was manifested as his being cut off from the garden of Eden and accessing the Tree of Life (essentially the true life manifested in the presence of God), as well as a return to dust. This “death” effected him while he was alive, as well as after he biologically died. His progeny, Israel, began to have a hope for resurrection after they “like Adam transgressed the covenant (cf. Hosea 6:7)”. The Law of Moses was given to Israel as an “atonement” (a covering that provided life when they walked in obedience – cf. Deuteronomy 30:15). However, instead of walking in obedience, Israel walked in disobedience and reaped death. Like the death of Adam, this death effected Israel while they were alive, as well as after biological death. This death was a covenant reality for all of Israel as they failed to walk in obedience to the Law of Moses, however the Law and the Prophets hoped for the “resurrection of the dead”.

“The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law (1 Corinthians 15:56)”

When we begin to examine the “hope of Israel” otherwise known as the “resurrection of the dead” through Scripture we arrive at an understanding of the corporate “bodily hope”. Understanding the focal point of this “bodily hope” as a “corporate reality” which establishes eternal life for the dead and the living, is referred to as the Corporate Body View (Salvation in the Body of Christ). This view is in contrast to what is often referred to as the IBV (Individual Body View), which demands that the doctrine of the “resurrection of the dead” involves an individual body that the saints receive – an Individual Body at Death (IBD). CBV advocates demonstrate that the “resurrection passages” found throughout the Bible are speaking about the “change” (alasso in the Greek) of the living saints and the making stand upright (apantesis in the Greek) of the “dead ones” into one immortal “corporate body” (the glorified Body of Christ). CBV advocates also assert that none of the “resurrection passages” found throughout Scripture, nor the “hope of Israel” otherwise known as the doctrine of the “resurrection of the dead”, pertain to any kind of individual body that the saints received or will receive. This is simply a false notion regarding the goal of eschatology that has been passed on throughout Church History, and is built upon faulty presuppositions as well as assumptions (Futurism, the Immortality of the Soul, the Resurrection of the Flesh, to name a few).

“He is the Head of the Body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything (Colossians 1:18)”.

A simple reading through the context of the Apostles Paul’s hope and his writings, say for example reading through the Book of Romans, will show that the “bodily hope” is detailing the death to one body and “newness of life” found in another. This is the Body of which Christ is the Head. It is important to note how Israel under the Law of Moses was understood to be a corporate people, and the Greeks are well known for their great “assemblies” or “bodies” (soma in the Greek) which they boasted in regards to. It was dying to these assemblies/bodies of identification and the being raised into the Body of Christ which would have been readily understood by people inclusively focused as the original audience was. This is what much of the “bodily talk” in the New Testament pertains to. This is a concept that a Hellenized spirituality (a spirituality based upon otherworldly notions that come from the imaginations of men as seen and passed on through Greco-Roman culture), or a 21st century mindset is not necessarily predisposed to.

Also, a Biblical consistency is revealed when we understand the narrative and the context of the “hope of Israel”. The death being defeated through Jesus Christ and the life being offered as represented through baptism begins to make sense. The resurrection of which Colossians 1:8 says that which is first in surely couldn’t be physical biological resurrection since we see this happen many times throughout the Scriptures. Also, as we study the Law and the Prophets, we see how unnecessary discussion about individual realities becomes and instead we develop the a prophetic imagination and get brought into the corporate reality fulfilled through Jesus Christ.

As we continue to see reformation happen within the Body of Christ, especially pertaining to eschatological details (which the “resurrection of the dead” is involved with), we need to move away from these strange notions of and focuses on individual realities, and instead cling to what we might call “resurrection realities”. Consider two texts that pointed to the hope of resurrection and what the outcome would be:

“Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but others to disgrace and everlasting contempt. Those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse of heaven, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever (Daniel 12:2-3)”.

“And the Lord God will save them in that day as the flock of His people; for they are as the stones of a crown, sparkling in His land. For what comeliness and beauty will be theirs! Grain will make the young men flourish, and new wine the virgins (Zechariah 9:16-17)”.

The “resurrection of the dead” is the ultimate conclusion of fulfilled Bible prophecy. The fulfillment of the every joy and tittle of the Law and the Prophets it all that the prophets longed and hoped for. In and through that fulfillment the Mystery of the Ages would be revealed The living and the dead would and were raised into a new “bodily experience” when the Messiah fulfilled all that was necessary for the restitution of all things. The Apostle Paul detailed the overcoming of the covenantal death, which was lamented through the Prophets in this manner:

“But when this perishable will have put on the the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting”.

Praise God for the Corporate Body Resurrection! The Glorified Immortal Body of Christ where Resurrection and Life is found.

Eschatology Debate Proposal (Preterism/ Futurism)

Dear Dr. John Pretlove,
First Baptist Church of Lakes
Las Vegas, Nevada

Dr. Pretlove, I approach you with this proposal in His holy service, and pray that all that is mentioned herein is received with humility and gentleness – as that is the intention I am writing with.

Recently, I have heard quite a bit of interest in the Las Vegas area regarding the truth of Full Preterism and the reforms it is provoking in congregations all over not only the United States, but also all over the world. This comes as a blessing, yet as with any reformation in Christian thought, it comes with iron sharpening iron. Paradigm shifts are never gentle, especially when the leaders are at the forefront labeling things “heresy”.

I listened to your sermon on 1 Corinthians chapter 15 that you podcast-ed as of July 12th, 2015. In said sermon you make some statements regarding those in the midst of your congregation who have expressed interest in these reforms, and then you proceed to misrepresent the Full Preterist position of the “Resurrection of the Dead” as a ‘Gnostic heresy’.

I have debated in defense of Full Preterism before, focusing on God’s glory in our debate, as well as mutually edifying conversation. You can watch some of these debates/ discussions on YouTube.

I say all of that to make a proposal to you. Since you did you diligent duty of what you see as “rebuking heresy” from the pulpit, I am now asking you to follow through and properly” debunk Preterism” in an honest way, not setting up what one might call a “straw man”.
Here is the proposal:

December 2015 at First Baptist Church of Lakes (you pick the dates- 2 nights)
Topic – The Work of Christ: What Has Been Fulfilled & What Has Not?!?!

1st Night we will present 30 minute arguments against each others position and answer audience concerns.

2nd Night we will do a debate and have final statements.

(of course we can deal with all the details once you accept this basic proposal)

I firmly believe that we can do this in a manner that glorifies God, challenges both of us to look honestly at our positions, and answer concerns of those within your congregation. Also, since you have seemingly “attacked” those in your midst preaching against a false version of “Full Preterism”, it seems fair to challenge you regarding the true position of Full Preterism, especially regarding “The Resurrection of the Dead”.

I will be looking forward to your response.
